Robocop 5 Alex Murphy war ein pflichtbewusster Polizist, der von einer örtlichen Bande brutal hingerichtet wurde. But when his mind is filled with cryptic symbols, the Decepticons target him and he is dragged back into the Transformers' war.

The year is and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Overseas, their drones have been used by the military for years - and it's meant billions for OmniCorp's bottom line.

Now OmniCorp wants to bring their controversial technology to the home front, and they see a golden opportunity to do it. When Alex Murphy Joel Kinnaman - a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit - is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp sees their chance for a part-man, part-robot police officer.

OmniCorp envisions a RoboCop in every city and even more billions for their shareholders, but they never counted on one thing: there is still a man inside the machine pursuing justice.

Written by Sony Pictures Entertainment. With Hollywood at a loss to make original movies, it was inevitable that the Robocop franchise would eventually get the reboot.

In , the original Robocop became an instant box office hit with its mixture of witty satire and over the top violence as well as top notch acting by Peter Weller, Kurtwood Smith and Ronny Cox; the deciding factor in what made that movie so fresh at the time was the addition of Dutch director Paul Verhoeven who seemed to understand what the audience at the time needed: a high tech cyborg artfully designed by special effects whiz Rob Bottin and its robotic suit would become a cinema icon who fought crime in a near future world overwhelmed by greed, hypocrisy, corruption and excessive, almost cartoonish violence.

In this reboot, the studios were able to acquire the services of Brazilian director Jose Padiha who directed Elite Squad and its sequel, two intense police thrillers set in his native Brazil but unfortunately they forgot to give him a good script to work with there were rumors during production that Padiha had a lot of ideas that were nixed by studio bosses.

The other reason why the original movie also worked was because its R rating worked in its favor: the enormous amount of bloodletting added to its satirical view of the future as well as that of American culture which really spoke to the audience.

With this reboot aimed at more family friendly crowds, the PG-rated violence is filmed using rapid jump cuts which makes it totally confusing, its like watching a video game on fast forward so that by the time your mind registers what's going on the scene is finished.

The movie itself also suffers from pacing problems- just when the narrative is about to steamroll forward, the scenes abruptly change so that any emotional momentum is lost because there just isn't much characterization of the main parts; everything that should have an emotional impact is glossed over by a jump to a new scene with way too much focus on explanations of what the characters are doing so that the audience fails to gain sympathy for anybody.

I can't really judge Joel Kinnaman's acting in the title role since there really isn't much for him to do other than walk around in the Robocop suit and utter a few words every now and then- he seems to spend too much time bug eyed and in shock more than anything else.

The supporting cast also seems wasted, with Michael Keaton and Jackie Earle Haley's screen time largely limited to trying to explain whats going on rather than actually doing anything.

Even Michael K Williams seems lost as Robocop's sidekick. Patrick Garrow as the heavy is pretty much a cardboard villain compared to the version with the menacing Kurtwood Smith and his gang of killer psychos.

Gary Oldman's performance is pretty much average since he's also got nothing much to do. Alas, the biggest disappointment is the movie's absence of any sort of humor: the film had boatloads of wacky commercials that interrupted the narrative yet provided a great view on how that future world was set up as well as crazy, sadistic villains and a pun on the name of the chief baddie Dick Jones- best name ever.

Instead, we get snippets of a news media show run by Samuel L Jackson whose presence in this movie is also wasted since he spends more time recapping what we already saw and his jokes fall flat.

The only good scene happens right at the beginning with a battle between Iranian insurgents and the robot army but soon after the movie quickly loses momentum and never regains it.

Better to skip this one and wait for the rental, or better yet, watch the version- its way better.

In Detroit, when Alex Murphy, a loving husband, father and good cop, is critically injured in the line of duty, the multinational conglomerate OmniCorp sees their chance for a part-man, part-robot police officer.

Added to Watchlist. After viewing a goodbye message left by Cable, Murphy returns to active duty to stop the resultant crime in Delta City due to the EMP pulse blacking out the city.

Based on the original film, the first RoboCop animated series features cyborg cop Alex Murphy Robocop , who fights to save the city of Old Detroit from assorted rogue elements, and on occasion, fighting to reclaim aspects of his humanity and maintain his usefulness in the eyes of the "Old Man", Chairman of OCP.

Many episodes see RoboCop's reputation put to the test or soured by interventions from Dr. He continually develops other mechanical menaces that threaten RoboCop.

In the police force, RoboCop is befriended as always by Officer Anne Lewis, but is also picked on and lambasted by the prejudiced Lieutenant Roger Hedgecock who appeared as a minor character in the original film and his first name revealed in Night of the Archer , ever determined to be rid of him and his kind, whom he sees as ticking time bombs.

Their rivalry comes to a fever pitch during the episode "The Man in the Iron Suit", in which Hedgecock comes close to finally beating Murphy with the aid of a new weapons system developed by McNamara.

He almost kills Lewis when she interferes, enraging Murphy into tearing Hedgecock's iron suit apart and nearly crushing his skull before Lewis emerges, alive and well.

Robocop is maintained by Robocop Project director Dr. He was voiced by Dan Hennessey. The series is set in the year and follows on from the previous animated series.

The series deals with RoboCop being reactivated after five years offline to assist a federal high-tech group, "Alpha Division" in their vigilance and struggle against DARC Directorate for Anarchy, Revenge, and Chaos a highly advanced terrorist organization and other forces of evil whenever that may be, globally or nationally.

The series shared many of the same writers who had contributed to the s animated series, but had even less in common with the films or television canon that it was based on, including the first animated series.

RoboCop now has numerous gadgets in his body that were never in the film, such as roller skates and a parachute.

The show also suffers from major continuity errors. In the first episodes we see RoboCop's son in his memories flashback and he appears to be around We later see his son in the series, to be exactly the same age and even wearing the same clothing, as his memories.

The absence of Anne Lewis was never explained. Besides RoboCop himself, Sgt. Reed is the only character from the films in the series.

It creates products for virtually every consumer need, has entered into endeavors normally deemed non-profit , and even manufactured an entire city to be maintained exclusively by the corporation.

OCP is depicted as a megacorporation with divisions affecting nearly every level of consumer need, society, and government.

Their products range from consumer products to military weaponry and private space travel. They are also the true main antagonists of every RoboCop film.

OCP owns and operates a privatized Detroit Police Department and in Robocop 3 employs criminals as a mercenary police force called the Rehabs short for Urban Rehabilitators.

OCP, throughout its depictions in the RoboCop films, has sought to fully privatize a dystopian Detroit, Michigan, into "Delta City", a manufactured municipality governed by a corporatocracy , with fully privatized services — such as police — and with residents exercising their representative citizenship through the purchase of shares of OCP stock.

They also serve as part of the military—industrial complex ; according to OCP executive Richard "Dick" Jones, "We practically are the military.

I say good business is where you find it. By the time of RoboCop: Prime Directives , OCP is being manipulated by a brash young executive who through murder and reallocation of resources, ascends to power to automate Delta City under a new artificial intelligence.

This is manipulated by a cyberterrorist, who seeks the destruction of the human race through a virus that can be introduced to computers and human beings alike.

However, due to the Dreyfus Act, which prohibits the use of robots for law enforcement, OmniCorp has been unable to penetrate the American market.

Sellars plans to circumvent the bill by placing the body parts of critically injured Detroit Police officer Alex Murphy into a robotic suit.

It serves as a foil for RoboCop, as well as a source of comic relief due to its lack of intelligence and tendency towards clumsy malfunctions.

For instance, during a boardroom demonstration by Dick Jones of ED's "disarm and arrest" procedure with a board executive named Kinney as the test subject, in which Kinney is given a pistol and told to point it at ED, ED fails to recognize that Kinney has dropped his weapon and blasts him to death in over-the-top fashion with its automatic cannons.

Later, it is shown that ED cannot climb or descend stairs as it tumbles trying to chase RoboCop. The ED was designed by Craig Davies , who also built the full-size models, and animated by Phil Tippett , a veteran stop-motion animator.

Davies and Tippett would go on to collaborate on many more projects. As one of the setpieces of the film, the ED's look and animated sequences were under the close supervision of director Paul Verhoeven , who sometimes acted out the robot's movements himself.

The new ED is slimmer in design and more heavily armed than the original version. In , Data East released a pinball machine based on the film.

The "Turbo Ride," as it was termed, was a Motion simulator "ride" attraction which could accommodate between 20 and 30 guests, and featured an oversized screen displaying the projection placed in front of synchronized hydraulically-activated seats.

The attraction was a mixture of motion picture film and computer animation, lasting approximately minutes. The attraction focused on the guest partnering with RoboCop, riding specialized police motorcycles on a mission to save the mayor of Detroit from "Cyberpunk ROM" and his gang.

In the latter part of the attraction, the motorcycle would then convert into "hover mode" and simulate flying through the skyline of New Detroit.

Though not as impressive or technical-savvy as other iWerks attractions at the time, the attraction was very popular amongst children and teenagers and especially in foreign markets outside of North America.

The attraction was removed from the iWerks theaters in the North American market in In February , there was a humorous ploy asking Detroit Mayor Dave Bing if there was to be a RoboCop statue in his 'New Detroit' proposal, which is planned to turn Detroit back into a prosperous city again.

When the Mayor said there was no such plan, and word of this reached the internet, there were several fund-raising events to raise enough money for the statue which would be built at the Imagination Station.

In early , fast food franchise Kentucky Fried Chicken announced that the latest celebrity to play the Colonel would be RoboCop.

The R-rated cinema version was slated to be released on Blu-ray by Sony in However, Sony pulled the Blu-ray just days before it was to be released.

Only a handful of copies were released to the general public, mainly reviewers, making it very rare. A remastered Blu-ray edition was released in January to tie into the remake.

The Blu-ray 4K master edition also features this unrated cut. Regarding the omitted scenes, Verhoeven stated on the anniversary edition DVD that he had wanted the violence to be "over the top", in an almost comical fashion such as the scene involving the executive that is killed by ED, and Bob Morton immediately asking "Somebody wanna call a goddamn paramedic?!

Verhoeven felt that the tone of the violence was more upsetting due to the deletions requested by the MPAA.

An alternate network TV Version was also released. The stronger language was either deleted or dubbed over. Blood was kept to a minimum.

And, instead of Boddicker running over Emil with his sedan, decapitating him in the process, he swerves around, and misses him.

The following scenes are presented in the uncut version of the movie which originally received an X Rating:. On November 26, , Arrow video put out a special Blu-ray edition with new extras, both cuts of the film, a television version cut, and interviews with Nancy Allen and Julie Selzer.

It uses the same 4K remaster MGM put out on their release back in In a interview, Edward Neumeier reflected on how the film's script is starting to play into reality: "We are now living in the world that I was proposing in RoboCop Two of the primary themes explored by RoboCop are the media and human nature.

On the Criterion Edition DVD commentary track, executive producer Jon Davison and writer Edward Neumeier both relate the film to the decay of American industry from the s through the early s, with the abandoned " Rust Belt style" factories that RoboCop and Clarence Boddicker's gang use as hideouts reflecting this concern.

Massive unemployment is prevalent, being reported frequently on the news, as are poverty and the crime that results from economic hardship.

This is represented in Murphy's horrific death alluding to the crucifixion of Jesus , his return alluding to the resurrection of Jesus , and the showdown with Clarence Boddicker at the steel mill, which finds RoboCop trudging through ankle-deep water, which alludes to Jesus walking on water.

Darian Leader considers RoboCop one example of how the cinema has dealt with the concept of masculinity, showing that to be a man requires more than having the body of a man: something symbolic that is not ultimately human must be added.

Leader wrote of RoboCop :. The RoboCop is a family man who is destroyed by thugs, then rebuilt as a robot by science. His son always insists, before the transformation, that his human father perform the gun spinning trick he sees on TV.

When the robot can finally do this properly, he is no longer just a male biological body: he is a body plus machinery, a body which includes within it the symbolic circuitry of science.

Old heroes had bits of metal outside them knights , but modern heroes have bits of metal inside them. To be a man today thus involves this kind of real incorporation of symbolic properties.

The depiction of Murphy's struggles in reasserting his humanity also deals with themes of identity.

This is even touched upon in the cyborg's construction. Rob Bottin and Paul Verhoeven, and Ed Neumeier had all come up with a concept that there would be such a potential for psychological disruption.

Even if you had supposedly wiped someone's memories and emotions they'd still might have some kind of residual humanity where, if they'd looked at themselves as a complete robot with no relation to their past organic form, they'd completely freak out and have a psychotic breakdown.

So the idea was that surgeons had literally skinned off Alex Murphy's face and then placed it on the cyborg. So it's not like they transplanted his head, they just took his face off and laid it on the cyborg, and that was to give him his own little sense of identity.

In , Entertainment Weekly named the film the 14th greatest action film of all time, [56] and Complex rated it as the 19th best action film of all time in The film was on the ballot for two of the American Film Institute 's Series lists.

These included Years RoboCop was a candidate in the science fiction category. In February , a humorous ploy asked Detroit Mayor Dave Bing if there was to be a RoboCop statue in his "New Detroit" proposal, which was planned to turn Detroit back into a prosperous city again.

When Bing said there was no such plan, and word of this reached the Internet, several fundraising events raised enough money for the statue, which would be built at the Imagination Station [64] led by Jerry Paffendorf and Brandon Walley.

There were plans to unveil the RoboCop statue in spring of In October , the Michigan Science Center announced that the project was no longer being worked on.

The status has been unknown as of December 29, On December 31, , Jerry Paffendorf of the Imagination Station announced that the statue was still underway to be reveiled later that winter.

The film novelization , written by Ed Naha , was released on June 1, The novel differed in several ways from the film by following one of the earlier drafts of the screenplay.

It expanded on Murphy's struggle with being part man and part machine, and his memories. It also included more "humanized" dialogue from RoboCop, as opposed to the minimal, cold dialogue heard in the film.

Joel Kinnaman plays the role of Alex Murphy and Gary Oldman is "Norton", a new character, "the scientist who creates RoboCop and finds himself torn between the ideals of the machine trying to rediscover its humanity and the callous needs of a corporation.

In January it was announced that original RoboCop writer Ed Neumeier was writing a direct sequel to the classic film that would ignore both sequels and the remake.

There's been a bunch of other RoboCop movies and there was recently a remake and I would say this would be kind of going back to the old RoboCop we all love and starting there and going forward.

So it's a continuation really of the first movie. In my mind. So it's a little bit more of the old school thing," Neumeier said.

Going well! Imagine watching Verhoeven do a follow up film. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. This article is about the film.
